Engraving by Lemaître, circa 1565?

Changed in the Middle Ages, surrounded by other buildings and with its base partially buried had neither the appearance of Roman times or that of today. Any representation aimed at showing its original form was therefore an interpretation. This is the case of the 'true portrait' by the Lyons engraver Jean Le Maître, who gave it an unlikely staircase.
