Painting by Hubert Robert, 1783

Hubert Robert painted architectural landscapes that generally assemble ancient monuments in the same way that a museum curator protects masterpieces from the 'ravages of time'. This 1783 painting is close to a real landscape, showing the medieval ramparts and the wall around the monastery. But he inserted the lost dedication and imagined the stairs and the podium, using the profile given by Clérisseau in his Antiquités de la France.
